An Idaho man who traveled to Utah to meet a decoy posing as his underage Internet acquaintance in a child-predator sting was sentenced this week to 7 years in federal prison.
Mark Turner, 47, of Twin Falls, Idaho, admitted to making arrangements to meet the acquaintance who he thought was a 13-year-old girl, prosecutors said.
Turner, using a Yahoo! screen name, chatted with the decoy between August and October 2006, prosecutors said. He urged her to pack her things, write a "runaway letter, take her mother's cell phone, dye her hair and meet him at a gas station in Sandy," prosecutors said.
The "minor" actually was an undercover agent for the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Turner was arrested Friday when he arrived at the arranged time, according to court records.
Police said they found condoms and lubrication in Turner's car. Turner at the time admitted talking with the "girl" but denied wanting to have sex with her. Police at the time said they believed Turner may have contacted girls in Salt Lake, Tooele and Utah counties.
Turner later pleaded guilty to two counts of using an interstate facility to transmit information about a minor for the purpose of enticement.
