The president of a Lindon business intends to plead guilty on behalf of his company to one count of harboring illegal aliens, court documents released Thursday state.
As part of the agreement, Martin Snow of Universal Industrial Sales, will acknowledge that his business knowingly hired dozens of undocumented workers since 2002. He will also agree that the company pay a fine of $200,000 and be placed on probation for five years.
According to court documents, Universal Industrial Sales knowingly accepted fraudulent Social Security cards from 67 employees and did not take steps to determine if those employees were eligible to work in the U.S. even after receiving notices from the government that Social Security numbers from many of the employees did not match government records.
The company, which makes metal highway signs and guardrails, was charged with 10 counts of harboring illegal aliens. Nine of those charges are expected to be dismissed as part of the deal.
In November, a federal judge ordered Alejandro "Alex" Urrutia-Garcia, the company's human resources manager, to serve 36 months of probation and pay $200 for helping undocumented applicants get jobs at Universal Industrial Sales.
Federal immigration authorities raided the business Feb. 7 and arrested about 50 workers suspected of being in the country illegally.
