A mother and her 11-month-old baby were without a home Saturday after an early morning fire consumed their mobile home.
Unified Fire Authority spokesman Wade Russell said the mother woke up around 12:35 a.m. Saturday and smelled someething burning. She went to check the furnace and found it was on fire.
The mother grabbed her baby and got out of the mobile home, then called 911.
When firefighters arrived at 3065 S. 700 East, the mobile home was fully engulfed in heavy flames and smoke, said Russell.
The entire mobile home was burned and was deemed a complete loss. Investigators said the damage totaled $5,000.
No one was injured in the blaze.
UFA offers fire recovery kits to those affected by home fires, including a hotel voucher for one night and phone numbers to the Red Cross -- "all you'd need during that initial night to get back on your feet," Russell said.
A second fire early Saturday morning in nearby South Salt Lake caused $100,000 in damage to three sheds, two cars, a carport and a four-plex.
Crews responded to reports of a blaze near 2800 South and 300 East at 12:50 a.m., said Deputy South Salt Lake Fire Chief Kevin Bowman.
Bowman said flames destroyed the two vehicles, carport, three sheds and charred the exterior wall of the four-plex.
Sixteen residents had to be evacuated during the blaze. Firefighters doused the flames in about 10 minutes, and residents were eventually able to return to their homes.
No one was injured in the fire.
Bowman said investigators have not yet determined a cause.
