Romney's wife has pre-cancerous lump removed

Ann Romney, the wife of former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had a pre-cancerous lump removed from her breast today.

Ann Romney, a graduate of Brigham Young University, was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in sutu last week following her annual mammogram at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

"It is technically not cancer but rather pre cancer, as it has not become invasive," Romney said in a statement released Friday. "Mitt and I feel fortunate to have caught this so early. And it reminds us how important it is for a women to have regular mammograms."

Romney was released from the hospital after the procedure.

Previously diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Romney discussed her health on the campaign trial as a way to bring awareness to the disease.

Mitt and Ann Romney have multiple ties to Utah. Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, led the 2002 Winter Olympic Organizing Committee. They also own a house in the state and are graduates of BYU. Romney, a Mormon, raised more than $5 million from Utahns in his failed presidential bid and remains a top contender for the 2012 Republican nomination.
