A 57-year-old Orem man was injured by his own handgun at work Tuesday when the holstered pistol slipped out of his hands, hit the floor and discharged.
The shooting occurred about 2 p.m. at an ammunition manufacturing business near 1300 S. Industrial Parkway in Provo, said police Capt. Cliff Argyle. The 9 mm bullet struck the man in the lower abdomen. The man had been wearing the pistol and was placing it into a bag when he dropped it and it went off.
The shooting occurred in an area of the business not open to the public, Argyle said. Another employee came to the man's aid and called 911.
The injured man was transported by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
The man was able to speak with officers at the hospital and it appears the bullet did not hit any vital organs, Argyle said.
The shooting was ruled an accident.
