Former child star Gary Coleman pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge on Tuesday in Payson Justice Court for allegedly driving into a man who was trying to take his picture at a local bowling alley.
Coleman, known for his role in the 1980s sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes," was ordered to serve a year of probation and pay a $100 fine as a result of the September incident. A judge ordered a misdemeanor reckless driving charge be dismissed as long as Coleman doesn't violate any laws in the next year.
Coleman, 40, was charged Sept. 6 in connection with allegedly assaulting 24-year-old Colt Rushton at the South County Lanes after Rushton attempted to take Coleman's photo with a cell phone camera.
The actor still faces a civil lawsuit filed by Rushton, who claims he has accumulated more than $10,000 in medical expenses and may have to have knee surgery because of injuries caused when Coleman drove into him with a truck, said Rushton's attorney Dustin Lance. Lance said Coleman's no contest plea helps move Rushton's civil case forward, because Lance can now force Coleman to give a deposition.
Coleman's attorney, Randy Kester, said Coleman wants to put the incident behind him. He said Coleman agreed to the no contest plea because it was not an admission of guilt.
Rushton, of Spanish Fork, is suing Coleman; his wife, Shannon Price; and bodyguard Paul Rohbock.
