A storm that began Saturday night dropped nearly a foot of snow in Roy and Layton and forced Interstate 15 to close Sunday afternoon near Brigham City, troopers said.
A 22-year-old mother of two was in critical condition Sunday evening after she lost control of her Volkswagen Golf at about 3:45 p.m. near Willard, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey. The northbound car slid over the snow and off the left side of the road, bouncing off a median wall and into the path of another northbound motorist that had lost control, Tingey said.
The second car, a Dodge Stratus, collided with the Golf. The Golf's driver was taken to Ogden Regional Medical center with critical injuries. Her 2-year-old and infant were taken to Ogden in fair condition. The Stratus was carrying two 18-year-old women, both students returning to Utah State University after the weekend; they were taken to Brigham City Hospital in serious condition.
After 22 crashes and 25 slide-offs Sunday afternoon near Brigham City, troopers closed the road there from 4 to 6 p.m., Tingey said. Idaho troopers had closed Interstate 84 near the state line Saturday; it was reopened at about 3 p.m., Tingey said.
A winter storm warning was to continue until 6 a.m. today in the northern and central Wasatch Front, including Ogden and Salt Lake City.
With 3 to 11 inches accumulating by Sunday evening from Salt Lake City through Weber County, the continuing storm was expected to drop another 6 to 10 inches by this morning.
The weather should get sunnier today, when clouds are predicted to clear. Sunny skies should continue Tuesday, and by Thursday or Friday, temperatures could hit 70 degrees.
