A new census report on federal spending shows that Utah remains near the bottom on per-capita spending.
The Consolidated Federal Funds Report, released today, said Utah received $6,486 in federal funds per resident, which is the second lowest. Nevada came in last at $6,032.
It is familiar territory for the Beehive State, which not only has the youngest population, but also the largest families.
Of the $2.56 trillion in domestic spending last year, nearly half was spent on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, much of which goes to older Americans.
Much of the money also goes for federal contracts and to pay federal employees. Virginia and Maryland, states with large numbers of federal workers, rank first and third, respectively, in per capital federal spending.
