Posted: 11:49 AM- Three certified public accountants have been sentenced by U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell in Salt Lake City to prison terms for their roles in a tax fraud conspiracy that helped clients evade more than $20 million in taxes.

Sentenced on Wednesday were Stephen F. Petersen, of Coalville, to 35 months in prison and Brent Metcalf, of Cottonwood Heights, to 24 months. Petersen also was ordered to forfeit $1,166,884.

On Thursday, CPA Reed H. Barker, of Littleton, Colo., was ordered to spend 18 months behind bars and pay restitution of $167,608.

The three accountants and attorney Dennis B. Evanson, of Sandy, were indicted in 2005 on charges they created false documentation for fake currency transaction losses, insurance expense deductions and capital losses.

Petersen, Metcalf and Barker pleaded guilty in the case. Evanson was convicted by a jury of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and assisting in the filing of false tax return charges. He was sentenced in August to 10 years in prison.
