Posted: 7:07 PM- Sparks from a construction project ignited a fire in Orem's University Mall after it was closed to business Wednesday.
It happened around 11 p.m. when crews were welding together some pieces of a tree house - part of an indoor children's play area - in the Canyon Court area at the mall's northeast wing near Mervyn's. Sparks from the welding torch apparently lit some polyurethane materials inside the tree.
Cindy Koenig, part of the mall's management team, said it is unclear how much smoke and water damage Wednesday's fire caused.
Mall Dental Group directly behind the construction area was damaged and Payless Shoes was closed this morning.
Otherwise, the 1.5 million-square-foot University Mall was open for business today, said Koenig.
