The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday announced the awarding of $14.9 million in grants to help tribal police departments around the nation.

In Utah, the Ute tribe will receive $399,724 to support its law-enforcement efforts. The rest goes to 79 tribal police departments and governments in 21 other states. The money - awarded under the Tribal Resources Grant Program of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services - funds equipment purchases and helps with training.

The grant program has provided almost $238 million to American Indian law enforcement agencies since 1995.
