Q&A session suddenly enters comic, personal gray area for Corroon

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon hosted a town-hall meeting recently to discuss a survey showing most township residents want to stick with the unincorporated county.

But the question-and-answer session went comically astray.

After a series of inquiries about whether the Legislature will allow unincorporated townships to remain intact or whether the county can provide basic government service like garbage pickup and snow removal to its growing population, one person asked this:

Does the mayor use Grecian Formula for his hair?

Corroon chuckled, conceding that his hair has grayed considerably since entering office in 2005. But his answer was "no" - no 1-2-3 color treatments to keep those silver strands at bay.

Should he start? That's a question for another survey.

Political gamemanship:

Two Salt Lake County Council candidates were put on the spot after showing up at the latest council meeting.

They weren't asked about overcrowding at the county jail or whether Hogle Zoo should get $65 million to help renovate its east-side animal park.

Instead, Republican Max Burdick and Democrat Roger Harding - both vying for outgoing GOP Councilman Marv Hendrickson's seat - were grilled about their golf game. What's your handicap, Council Chairman Michael Jensen asked.

It's in the triple digits, answered Harding. It's a love for playing golf, replied Burdick.

Then Hendrickson added his own supposed handicap: a 28.

"I've played with you, Marv," responded Jensen, raising his eyebrows. "I love you, Marv, but . . ."

Hendrickson shouldn't worry. He will have a lot more time to improve his game next year after finishing two terms on the council.
