A 24-year veteran with the Utah Department of Public Safety has been selected to be Salt Lake County's new emergency-management coordinator.

The County Council will consider Jeffrey Graviet's nomination today.

Holding the rank of major, Graviet served as Utah's deputy director of Homeland Security, being responsible for the state's division of emergency management. He also held command positions with the Utah Highway Patrol, state Bureau of Investigations and as deputy director for Peace Officer Standards and Training.

"His expertise is exactly what we need," County Mayor Peter Corroon said, "so that Salt Lake County will be well-prepared for a large-scale emergency."

Graviet, who replaces Robert Flowers, is a graduate of the Northwestern Police Staff and Command College.

As coordinator, Graviet would function in a confidential and key policymaking capacity on everything from public-safety crises to natural disasters.

"This opportunity gives me a chance to use my skills and experience," Graviet said. "I'm eager to be a part of the first-responder community and develop personal-preparedness programs [and] emergency plans."

If confirmed, Graviet will start in mid-August.
