The fire cost more than $30,000 to fight. And the couple could be forced to foot the bill.
Two people were lighting fireworks on the mountain feet away from the "Y" when they ignited the area, leading to a blaze that burnt grass, sagebrush and oak brush, according to National Forest Service spokeswoman Loyal Clark. Provo police arrested James William Hebda, 23, and Camille Gardner, 20, both of Orem.
They posted bail at Utah County jail after being booked on suspicion of reckless burning.
After crews monitored hot spots through nearly 100-degree heat Friday, the wildfire was contained at about 8 p.m.
Clark said the area's trail system created natural fire breaks that helped to contain the blaze quickly. The fire began around 1:30 a.m.
Clark stressed that people who start wildfires can be held responsible for all suppression costs. So far, the tab for the Y Mountain blaze includes costs for two helicopters and a team of 50 firefighters.
Meanwhile, a fire Thursday night destroyed the abandoned Bridal Veil Falls Restaurant in Provo Canyon. Investigators are looking into what might have triggered that fire, but it is believed to have been caused by people. Clark described the restaurant as an old, deteriorating structure at the mountaintop where a tram once ran.
Kids often hike up to the restaurant, and Clark said there have been issues with vandalism since the building closed in the late 1990s after an avalanche.
That fire was contained to the restaurant and did not spread to any vegetation, Clark said.
A third fire, in Diamond Fork's Monks Hollow area, burned 3 to 5 acres just off Spanish Fork Canyon.
