Thursday's scattered showers, a little bit of thunder and highs in the upper-80s usher in what could be record-setting heat for northern Utah this weekend.

Friday will dawn dry and sunny, with highs in the mid-80s. But Saturday's temperatures will climb into the low-90s, again under clear, bright skies — and that might see Salt Lake City challenge its previous (1994) record high of 94 degrees.

Another record seems in peril come Sunday, when the forecast calls for mid-90s along the Wasatch Front. The capital city's 96-degree mark of June 4, 1988 will be well within range.

Yogi Berra once said: "It ain't the heat, it's the humility." So, be humble enough to slather on the sunblock lotion, wear a hat, and stay hydrated out there.

Or, just stay inside, turn on the TV and hoist a mug of suds to the Yankees, or even the Cubs. Because, while "Love is the most important thing in the world . . . baseball is pretty good, too." (Berra, again).

Southern Utah's heat records seem safe through the coming weekend, but temperatures — while expected to fall at least 5 degrees short of history-making — still will be higher than the norm by several degrees.

After Thursday's low-90s, Friday will bring upper-90s under clear, sunny skies to Utah's Dixie. Saturday and Sunday will hit 101 (6 degrees shy of 1996's mark of 107 degrees for both dates).

The Utah Division of Air Quality once more places the entire state under its "yellow," or compromised air quality banners as the weekend nears. Levels of particulates in the state's air were considered "moderate."

Grass was "very high" and mold "high" on the pollen index provided Thursday by the Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website. Other allergens were "low," or did not register.
