A Uintah County wildfire had grown to more than 900 acres by Tuesday evening, but it did not threaten structures, authorities said.

The fire was reported in the afternoon, about 8 miles east of Jensen, said Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Kelsey Birchell.

It grew quickly from 200 acres to 900, and firefighters had yet to contain any of it. But Birchell said the fire's spread was expected to slow through the night as temperatures cooled and winds died down.

Volunteer fire crews joined engines from Vernal, the U.S. Forest Service and the BLM to fight the flames, Birchell said.

While the fire was not threatening structures, it did cause the temporary closure of U.S. Highway 40 from Jensen to the Colorado state line Tuesday evening. Birchell said it was unlikely the highway would close again Wednesday. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
