Bountiful police are searching for a 13-year-old girl missing since Tuesday afternoon.

Police became concerned about Kayla Leatherman's whereabouts after learning that she had recently been in contact via social media and text messages with an unknown man from Idaho, Bountiful Assistant Chief Ed Biehler said.

Leatherman was last seen walking with a classmate at about 3 p.m. in the area of 500 South and Main Street, he said. Police watched camera footage and saw her leave school alone.

Biehler said police were running down leads from classmates and family Tuesday evening, as well as working to learn more about Leatherman's relationship with the Idaho man. There was nothing sexual found in the messages, he said.

Biehler said Leatherman's parents found out about the messages and confronted the teen, which upset her.

Leatherman was last seen in a black hoodie with a blue and red logo, with jeans and black shoes. She is 4-foot-11, with long brown hair.
