An 8-year-old Cache County child is dead after being crushed by a steel loading ramp on a trailer on Monday.

The child was climbing on the loading ramp of a snowmobile-type trailer near 400 Cannibal Road in Cove, just before 10 a.m., a Cache County Sheriff's Office news release said.

The ramp was up when the child was crawling on it, the release said, but it came loose and pinned the child to the ground, the release said.

Medical personnel took the child to a Logan-area hospital by ambulance and eventually flew the child by helicopter to a Salt Lake Valley hospital.

The child was pronounced dead a few hours later, the release said.

The release said the incident is being "investigated as a tragic accident" and that no further details will be released "out of respect for all those involved."
