A 25-year-old man died Saturday when the Hyundai sedan he was riding in slammed into a light pole and gate outside the Tesla dealership in South Salt Lake.

The car was southbound on South State Street when it veered off the road for an unknown reason about 3 p.m., South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said.

It struck a light pole and the protruding end of a metal gate impaled the windshield, he said. The 25-year-old passenger was transported to a hospital, where he later died. His identification was not available pending notification of the family. The 24-year-old driver was transported to a hospital and later released, before being arrested on charges unrelated to the crash, Keller said.

Keller said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
