New traffic shifts caused by construction, plus upcoming ramp closures, may complicate travel this week on west-side Interstate 215, State Road 201 and 3500 South.

On Wednesday, the ramp from northbound I-215 to westbound 3500 South is scheduled to close for up to 90 days, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Crews plan to replace pavement on that ramp, and the closure will allow reconstruction of the northbound I-215 bridge at 3500 South.

Also, S.R. 201 is scheduled to close in both directions on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews plan to demolish the existing northbound I-215 bridge over S.R. 201. UDOT advises drivers to avoid S.R. 201 during that closure and to use I-80 as an alternate.

UDOT also reminds drivers to watch for changing travel patterns as I-215 is rebuilt between 4700 South and S.R. 201.

Among recent changes is that the ramp from eastbound S.R. 201 to northbound I-215 is now closed through the summer for reconstruction.

Also, northbound lanes on I-215 are now split from 4700 South to S.R. 201. Drivers seeking to exit at 4700 South, 3500 South or S.R. 201 must merge into the two right lanes before they reach 4700 South.

Crews recently completed reconstruction of southbound lanes on I-215, and traffic in the northbound lanes has been shifted onto the new pavement there as work now focuses on rebuilding northbound lanes.

"Completing the southbound lanes is a significant milestone on the I-215 west-belt project," said UDOT project manager Oanh Le-Spradlin. "Drivers can see just what the new road improvements will feel like when the project is done."

The I-215 reconstruction project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
