A man riding a bicycle died Sunday afternoon after being hit by a car in West Valley City, police said.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot after the collision at 5504 W. 3500 South, according to tweets from police.

The bicyclist, who was riding west on 3500 south and died at the scene, has been identified as 65-year-old John Kinn.

Police were searching for the suspect, described as a black man with medium length dreadlocks tied in a ponytail dressed in all black clothes.

Investigators also were trying to contact the owner of the car, which has California plates.

As of late Sunday afternoon, 3500 South was closed in both directions from 5200 West to 5600 West.
