A West Valley City man faces numerous felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly tried to stop a passing car and then fired a handgun at the vehicle as it sped away from a crowded strip mall.

The 41-year-old man, who had a record of past misdemeanor drug possession and distribution convictions, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail Sunday afternoon on suspicion of third-degree felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm.

Jail records indicate he posted $20,000 bond on Monday afternoon and was released pending court proceedings.

The incident occurred about 3 p.m. Sunday at 3650 S. Redwood Road.

A couple was driving through the area when the suspect allegedly approached them, a .357-magnum revolver in his hand, and ordered them to stop. Instead, as he tried to open the door, the couple sped away and the suspect fired two rounds.

Several people reportedly witnessed the confrontation from the strip mall's parking lot, running from the scene as the gunfire erupted. No one was hurt.

A probable cause statement alleges that the suspect, who had a concealed carry firearm permit, smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes.

Permit or not, possessing a loaded firearm while intoxicated is illegal.
