Riverdale police chased down and arrested a 15-year-old boy who allegedly fired numerous gunshots near an elementary school.

Police Lt. Casey Warren said officers responded about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to 911 calls reporting gunshots in Riverdale Park, which adjoins a playground at Riverdale Elementary School.

The incident occurred outside normal school hours and no one was hurt, but when officers arrived they spotted the suspect and a foot chase ensued.

The youth was taken into custody, and officers confiscated a semi-automatic handgun and ammunition from him. The 15-year-old obtained the gun and the ammunition from home, Warren said Thursday.

"At this point in the investigation, we haven't identified a specific target or motive for the shooting [but] there has been no evidence that would suggest the school was a target," Warren said.

Charges have not been filed, pending a mental-health evaluation, according to Warren.
