A SWAT team, along with officers from several local police agencies, arrested a man after in a prolonged standoff with him Monday at a home in Fairview.

Fairview Mayor Jeffrey Cox said the incident began with a city police officer being dispatched to a 5 a.m. complaint that the 35-year-old suspect had violated a protective order, entered his former home and threatened family members.

The family fled, but the man remained inside. When the officer approached the front door the man allegedly threatened him, so he called for backup.

Learning that there were firearms inside the home, a SWAT team was dispatched from neighboring Utah County. Nearby homes were evacuated as police set up a perimeter and a SWAT negotiator began trying to talk the man into surrendering.

A few minutes before 1 p.m., police entered the home with a K-9, and the dog sniffed the man out and bit him, Cox said. There were no other injuries.

Earlier, officers had tried unsuccessfully to force the man out with tear gas, Cox said, adding that no shots were fired.

In addition to Fairview police and the SWAT team, law officers from the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office and neighboring Mount Pleasant responded.

North Sanpete School District officials briefly put Fairview Elementary School, located about half a mile from the standoff scene, on lockdown. As of 11 a.m., normal operations at the school had resumed.
