Salt Lake City International Airport diverted flights, homes lost power and trees toppled because of heavy gusts of wind Thursday evening.

About two dozen flights were diverted to nearby airports in the region because of heavy wind, according to airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer.

Wind gusts — which, according to the National Weather Service, blew as fast as 70 mph — brought down trees in Murray and Magna and fanned the flames of a brush fire near Redwood Road and 2320 South. Eagle Mountain reported a downed power pole at the intersection of Pony Express Parkway and Porter's Crossing.

Homes in the Salt Lake Valley, Cache County, Weber County and Saratoga Springs lost power after wind blew trees and debris into power lines, according to Rocky Mountain Power spokesman David Eskelsen.

About 7,300 homes throughout the Salt Lake Valley lost power. Weber County and Cache County each had 3,000 homes reporting power outages. At least 700 homes in Saratoga Springs reported power outages.
