West Valley City police were investigating a fatal automobile-pedestrian crash Monday.

Police identified 79-year-old Vickie Lee Kiger, of West Valley City, as the victim of the crash.

The incident occurred near 1570 West and 4100 South as Kiger attempted to cross in heavy traffic from north to south about 11 a.m., WVCPD spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

Kiger was not in a crosswalk and had almost made it to the center of the expressway when she was struck by an SUV traveling about 45 mph.

She was transported to the hospital in grave condition and died a short time later.

Vainuku said investigators found no indications of excessive speed or impairment involving the SUV's male driver.

No citations were issued, though the incident remained under investigation.
