An early Thursday morning power outage temporarily left more than 6,000 Provo homes and businesses in dark.

Provo City Power reported the outages began about 5:30 a.m. and within an hour had spread from the Brigham Young University campus on the city's east side and then west through an area roughly bordered by Center Street, North State Street, 2000 South and Interstate 15.

"We have heard several reports of loud bangs and flashes. [Repair] crews found a pole that had been on fire. The assumption is that lightning caused the outage," the utility stated,

By 7:15 a.m., all but about 2,000 customers had been restored to service. An hour later, all clients were back on the power grid.

Meanwhile, spokesman Dave Eskelsen said Rocky Mountain Power customers escaped major outages during a night of storms. However, crews were dispatched throughout the early morning hours to restore service to about 100 customers each in Milford, Ogden, and east-central Salt Lake City.
