Carpe diem? Sure. But Utah's forecast for a string of early spring days has a lot of people thinking it's time to carpe vacationem.
Well, the calendar-makers might object. After all, winter doesn't end until March 20. Still, it's tough to shovel sunshine; and don't even think of ice-skating on that pond now.
Northern Utah's temperatures will flirt with an above-normal 70 degrees on Tuesday, up a couple degrees from Monday's highs. Wednesday will bring low-70s to the Wasatch Front, under partly cloudy to sunny skies — a trend expected to continue through next weekend and right up to "official" spring.
In southern Utah, maybe it should be carpe med diem (seize the sunscreen lotion?). Tuesday promises afternoon temperatures in the low-80s under sunny skies, an encore of Monday's forecast. Highs in Utah's Dixie will remain in the 80s through week and beyond.
Carpe altum spiritus (take a deep breath), the Utah Division of Air Quality might say, having given "green," or healthy grades for all state air monitoring districts into the midweek.
Meanwhile, the advice from the Utah Avalanche Center might be carpe vigilantiam (be careful out there): the risk for potentially deadly backcountry mountain snowslides was "moderate" for the Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo mountains.
