U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is scheduled to speak to Utah State Bar lawyers in July.
Ginsburg, 83, is slated to be the keynote speaker either on July 27 or 28 at the organization's summer convention in Sun Valley, Idaho — an appearance organized by convention co-chairs Federal District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby and attorney Amy Sorenson.
"This is a tremendous honor for Utah lawyers and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear from a highly esteemed and respected jurist," Utah State Bar President Robert O. Rice said.
Ginsburg has been a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court since August 1993 after her appointment by President Bill Clinton. Regarded as one of the most liberal justices on the court, she has a penchant for producing scathing dissents as counterpoints to her more conservative colleagues.
Ginsburg follows up last summer's keynote speaker, Dean Strang, who came to fame as one of Steven Avery's trial lawyers in the hit Netflix documentary series "Making a Murderer."
The convention, held July 26 through 29, is a means for Utah attorneys to obtain required continuing legal education credits in ethics, professionalism and civility. The gathering also includes business reports and award ceremonies, said Utah State Bar spokesman Sean Toomey.
Ginsburg also follows 2015 speaker and fellow Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who discussed the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta — a precursor and foundation of future documents like the Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution.
