West Valley City • A domestic dispute at a West Valley City home on Tuesday morning culminated in a man allegedly shooting his father to death with a shotgun, wounding his grandmother with the same gun and stabbing his grandfather with a knife.

Killed was 46-year-old Gregory Vandemerwe, who is the father of the alleged shooter, 23-year-old Michael Vandemerwe.

The suspect's 67-year-old grandmother, initially in critical condition with a gunshot wound, was upgraded n Wednesday to stable condition, police said. The suspect's 68-year-old grandfather, whom police say was stabbed, was in good condition, police said.

Public safety dispatchers say the initial 911 call came was recorded 5:02 a.m. from a home at 3995 S. 1500 West. The female caller tld dispatcher that a male was being "physical and belligerent ... was yelling at people and had a shotgun," according to a probable cause statement filed with the Salt Lake County jail.

The dispatcher then heard gunshots and the caller said she had been shot. The line then went silent.

Police arrived to find Gregory Vandemerwe dead of a gunshot wound.

Michael Vandemerwe, who exited the home as officers arrived, surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.

He allegedly told police he used the shotgun to shoot two people and a knife to injure a third victim.

"The suspect made admissions to suggest his intentions were to end their lives," the probable cause statement said. "At the time of the interview, the suspect believed that all three people in the house were deceased or going to be."

Michael Vandemerwe was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of murder, two counts of attempted murder and unlawful discharge of a firearm, police said. Bail was set at $1 million. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday.

The shooting stemmed from an altercation over an undisclosed issue, West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

Neighbors described the grandfather as "active." He could often be seen working outside, they said, waving to passers-by.

Magdalena Osuna, who has lived next door to the family for more than 10 years, said they were good neighbors and friends to her and her husband.

The grandfather would often drink coffee and chat with her husband in the morning, she said, and Osuna would visit with his wife after coming home work. Their son, Gregory Vandemerwe, had moved into the house within the last few years, Osuna said, and later, their grandson moved in, as well.

Osuna described the suspect as a loner, adding that he had grown up in an otherwise unspecified "bad environment," but had seemed to be doing better recently, working a steady job.

When they saw police lights at her neighbors' home this morning, Osuna said, she and her husband tried calling the older couple, but no one answered.
