A man was struck and killed by a TRAX train Saturday, while a separate Utah Transit Authority crash damaged a commercial truck in Bountiful.

Witnesses said a man was crossing the train track from the parking lot onto the TRAX platform at Meadowbrook Station in South Salt Lake about 10:30 a.m. when a northbound train struck him, said UTA spokesman Remi Barron. The man reportedly hadn't looked up before crossing into the train's path.

Passengers exited the train to render first aid to the man until medical personnel arrived and took over, said UTA police Capt. Jason Petersen. The man later died from his injuries, Barron said.

Police are trying to notify the victim's family before disclosing his name to the public.

About half an hour before the man was hit, just before 10 a.m., a southbound FrontRunner train collided with a commercial semi truck that was on the tracks in Bountiful about 1100 North and 100 East, Barron said. Cargo from the truck was scattered throughout the area after the collision, he said.

Lindon Brown was a passenger sitting in the seat right behind the conductor in the front of the train. She said she was looking at her phone when she heard the conductor pull the train's horn.

Brown looked up, saw the semi in the train's path and watched as the train struck the semi. She was sitting near two big windows, she said, and braced for the impact. The train pulled all the way through the crash scene before stopping, she said.

Brown checked to see if the conductor and everyone in her car was all right and then called 911, she said.

Passengers were stopped for about two hours while officials inspected the damage, she said, and were pulled back to the Woods Cross station in a different car.

Police were investigating why the semi was on the tracks and whether the weather was a factor, Barron said.

No one was reported injured in that collision, Barron said.

Also on Saturday, a downed power pole delayed the TRAX Red Line between the Fashion Place West and Bingham Junction stations near Murray and Midvale. Barron said he didn't know what caused the pole to fall.
