Provo gets new priest in centuries-old ceremony

The Rev. Timothy J. Yanni was ordained a priest at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Provo in a ceremony Saturday that harks back centuries, with clear parallels between Catholic and Anglican traditions.

In it, the candidate declares his belief that Christian scriptures are "the Word of God," which "contain all things necessary to salvation," and swears to "conform to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church."

The congregants recite together the Nicene Creed and attest their support for the candidate. The bishop lays hands on the candidate's head and offers a prayer that God will fill the new priest with the Holy Spirit. He is then "vested" — dressed in the robes of the priesthood — by fellow priests.

The ritual concludes when the newly ordained priest blesses the people "to live without fear and live without shame ... [to] always walk the good road with Jesus our Savior."
