Salt Lake City plans to halt compost-can collection for several weeks this winter to conserve resources and reduce air pollution.

From Jan. 23 to March 10, the city will not collect brown yard-waste cans, a Friday news release from the city said, and will save an estimated 5,234 gallons of fuel, valued at about $10,000.

The break will decrease pollution, the release said, and the amount of greenhouse-gas emissions officials estimate will be eliminated is equivalent to removing 13 passenger vehicles from the road for a year.

"Only 1 percent of curbside compost cans are set out for collection in the winter," Mayor Jackie Biskupski said in the release.

Salt Lake City residents with autumn yard waste are asked to contact the city's waste and recycling department at 801-535-6999 to coordinate leaf disposal, and residents with holiday trees are encouraged to cut them into several pieces and dispose of them no later than collection day the week of Jan. 16.

Compost-can collection will restart the week of March 13.
