Nearly 2,700 Tooele residents were without electricity early Friday morning, an outage that occurred as rain propelled by winds gusting over 50 mph whipped northern Utah.

About 2 a.m., Rocky Mountain Power crews were dispatched to the darkened community 35 miles west of Salt Lake City. By 5:30 a.m., they had restored services to all but 10 customers.

RMP spokeswoman Margaret Oler said the outage was "definitely weather-related," saying it appeared that the high winds and subsequent rain combined to cause insulators on a power pole to spark, igniting the pole and disrupting service.

RMP crews also responded to a smaller outage in Midvale about 1 a.m., but had some 230 customers back on the power grid by 4 a.m.
