Rebuffed when begging for money, a panhandler next pulled a knife to rob a man in a downtown Salt Lake City restaurant's parking lot.

Salt Lake City police Detective Robert Ungricht said the incident occurred outside the Wendy's, 243 W. 400 South, just before noon Sunday.

The man had just arrived at the eatery, located half a block from homeless-inundated Pioneer Park, when the male suspect approached and asked for cash.

The victim, in the process of freeing his 1-year-old son from a car seat, told the man he had no spare change.

The suspect — a white male 30-40 years old, 6 feet tall, with long brown hair, blue eyes and wearing blue jeans — then punched the victim in the side. When the victim turned to confront the suspect, he saw the knife.

The suspect demanded cash, got it, and then fled the scene on foot.
