American Fork • Two people were killed in American Fork on Sunday night — part of a complex situation involving at least two crime scenes, one where shots were fired by police officers.

A woman called 911 at 7:26 p.m. and frantically reported that shots were being fired at her vehicle, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

Officers subsequently found the woman dead in her vehicle in the parking lot at the Wal-Mart at 949 W. Grasslands Drive, in American Fork.

An American Fork police officer and a sheriff's deputy — who had a description of a suspect vehicle provided by witnesses — located the gray SUV at Gordmans, 219 Meadow Lane, in American Fork.

There was a short pursuit by the two officers through the shopping center to the Cinemark Theater, 715 W. Main Street, in American Fork, Cannon said.

In the parking lot of the theater, the man driving the SUV got out with a gun, Cannon said. The officers told him to drop the weapon, but he did not, Cannon said.

At 7:35 p.m, the officers fired at the man — at least three shots between the two of them, said Cannon, who noted that just nine minutes elapsed between the 911 call and the officer-involved shooting.

The man was killed, but Cannon said he did not know if the officers' bullets had inflicted the fatal wounds. He said there was the possibility the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Medical personnel worked on the man — reported to be in his mid-30s — for about 20 minutes before pronouncing him dead, Cannon said.

The officers were not injured.

Police said they were investigating what, if any, the relationship was between the dead woman and the man with the gun.

The woman's car, a light green Volkswagen Beetle, appeared to have seven bullet holes in the front-passenger window and another bullet hole in the rear passenger-side window. The car also appeared to have fresh impact damage to the passenger side.

Cannon said the suspect's SUV, a Chevrolet Tahoe, also had signs of collision damage.

Cannon said the parking lot of the Costco and Les Schwab in nearby Lehi had also been identified as a possible crime scene.

"That may have been the initiation of this [the woman's slaying], in that area," he said.

Because portions of the theater parking lot were a crime scene, theater patrons were initially not allowed to leave the building. Officers later escorted theater patrons to their vehicles.
