Three inmates were stabbed with a "homemade weapon" at the Utah State Prison on Tuesday afternoon, officials say.

Four inmates at the Draper facility's maximum security unit got in a fight about 2 p.m., according to a news release from the Department of Corrections.

Three of the prisoners suffered stab wounds during the altercation, though police said it was not immediately clear who perpetrated the attacks.

Prison employees stopped the fight, and a physician on staff responded to treat the injuries. The inmates were later transported to nearby hospitals for further care.

They were all in stable condition and expected to recover, said Corrections spokeswoman Maria Peterson.

The prison was put on lockdown after the stabbing, confining inmates to their units and controlling movement in the facility during the investigation by Unified police.
