A semi-trailer rig overturned on Interstate 15 in Juab County Wednesday morning, spilling car batteries that broke open and spread acid over a 100-foot area.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said that troopers closed down all northbound lanes of the freeway at mile post 203, about 16 miles north of Scipio. The freeway was reopened at about 3:30 p.m.

"One of the busiest travel days of the year and we've got a prolonged closure [on a major interstate]," Royce said.

No injuries were reported in the 5 a.m. crash, but troopers were diverting drivers onto I-70 and U.S. 89 while wreckage was cleared and Utah Department of Transportation hazardous materials workers cleaned up the spill.

Troopers reported that for reasons yet to be determined, the big rig had veered off the road to the left, then over-corrected to the right and rolled onto its left side. The semi and its single trailer slid 100 feet before coming to a rest, blocking both northbound lanes.
