Mountain snow and valley rains gave northern Utahns a cold, drizzly welcome to the new work week.

The National Weather Service put the state's Wasatch, central and southern mountain spine under a Winter Weather Advisory Monday morning. Snow accumulations of up to 10 inches were expected before the advisory expired 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A full-fledged Winter Storm Warning was issued for pockets of eastern Utah, primarily northeast of Green River and a swath of the region stretching from Moab through Monticello.

By noon Monday, Alta had measured 3 inches of new snow, while Brighton and Snowbird resorts had 2 and 1, respectively. Rain was heavy in some valley locations, ranging from .87 inches in Sardine Canyon, .77 in Zion National Park and .70 in Cedar City to .62 in Mendon, .54 in Ogden, .33 in Salt Lake City, .27 in Provo and .21 inches in West Valley City.

The Salt Lake and Tooele valleys began their wet Monday with lows in the 40s, and highs were not expected to reach more than the mid-50s. Tuesday, after overnight rain and snow, was to clear somewhat; pre-dawn temperatures will be in the mid-30s and the day's highs slipping to about 50 degrees.

Snow is on the menu for the Wasatch Front again on Wednesday, with overnight lows near freezing and daytime highs in the low-50s.

Rain showers and thunderstorms rolled through southern Utah Monday. Lows were in the low-40s and highs in the mid-50s. Tuesday was to bring some clearing of the storm clouds and highs in the low-60s, while Wednesday's forecast was for sunshine and highs in the mid-60s.

The Utah Division of Air Quality, always a fan of precipitation and atmospheric stirring associated with storms, awarded "green," or healthy grades statewide.
