A woman was in critical condition Friday evening after she was allegedly shot in the chest in South Salt Lake.

Officers responded to a call of a shooting about 4 p.m. at an apartment complex near 480 East and Stanley Ave. (3182 South), according to a news release from South Salt Lake police. When responders arrived, there was no victim at the scene — they later received a call from dispatchers about a woman with a gunshot wound at a nearby hospital.

Investigators met a 21-year-old woman there who'd been hit by a bullet in the upper torso, the release states. Though she is in critical condition, she is expected to survive.

The woman arrived at the hospital with a man after a third person dropped the two off. The man was taken into custody, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller.

It is unclear what the relationship is between the man and woman and what transpired before the gunshot. Keller declined to release details on the man until he is booked.

The incident is under investigation.
