Utah Heritage Foundation has won a national award for its role in preserving the state's historic buildings and places.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded nonprofit created by Congress in 1949, gave the foundation its Trustees' Award for Organizational Excellence, making it one of 11 individuals and groups recognized for 2016.

In a statement, the National Trust's president and CEO, Stephanie Meeks, praised the volunteer-backed group for its education programs and use of low-interest loans and preservation easements as tools for saving Utah's historic resources.

Utah Heritage Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and was honored in September by Gov. Gary Herbert.
