Police were looking for three male suspects following an early Thursday armed robbery and shooting in downtown Salt Lake City.

Public safety dispatchers confirmed that a 911 call reporting gunfire came in at 3:10 a.m. from 25 S. 700 East.

Responding officers found a man who had suffered a gunshot wound in the leg. He was taken to the hospital where he was reported to be in fair condition.

The victim claimed that the men were responding to his online KSL classified sales advertisement for a cellphone, instead he was robbed.

However, Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking said investigators had questions about the timing of the purported sale, if not the item supposedly being sold.

"The victim has been less than cooperative, and his story is rather vague," Wilking said.

Two of the assailants were described as Latinos and the third was a black male, but the victim did not provide more detailed suspect descriptions than those.

A search of the area by police officers and dogs failed to turn up the suspects.
