An early Wednesday morning shooting at a family party in Millcreek ended with one man in the hospital and another behind bars.

Unified Police Detective Jared Richardson said officers were dispatched shortly at 2:40 a.m. to a residence at 1506 E. 3045 South on a report of gunfire, and found a 21-year-old male victim in serious condition with a wound to the upper torso.

Less than half an hour later, officers with the Metro Gang Unit pulled over a car driven by a woman with the 37-year-old male shooting suspect as a passenger. Both of them initially were taken into custody, though it was the male, believed to have been the shooter, who was eventually arrested and initially booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony discharge of a firearm.

The victim's injury was not believed life-threatening.

Richardson said the suspect had confronted the victim at the party, alleging the man had assaulted his sister. The argument escalated with the suspect allegedly first pistol-whipping the victim and then shooting him.
