A preliminary investigation indicates a "medical condition" may have afflicted the driver of an SUV that veered off a Clearfield road and struck a teenage girl as she sat in her front yard earlier this month.

Clearfield police Lt. Kelly Bennett said Monday that the accident occurred just before 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 when the Chevrolet Blazer, driven by a 27-year-old woman, left the roadway near 1550 S. 1000 East and hit the 14-year-old girl. The SUV then collided with the girl's home.

The girl, who sustained broken bones and burns, was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she remained in serious but improving condition on Monday, police said.

Bennett said the driver, identified as Kari Ford of Clearfield City, also had three small children in her vehicle; they were unhurt. Ford was taken to a local hospital, examined and later released.

While investigation into the accident continues, Bennett said that preliminary findings "suggests that Ms. Ford possibly suffered from a medical condition while driving."

Bennett did not further detail that condition, but said Ford continues to cooperate with investigators.

No charges have been filed.
