A woman is dead and her husband was in critical condition after a crash in West Valley City on Saturday.

The couple was traveling south in a sedan on 5600 West about 5:15 p.m., said West Valley City police Lt. Robert Hamilton. When attempting to go left onto 4700 South, the car turned in front of an SUV traveling north. Both apparently had a yellow light.

The SUV struck the passenger side of the sedan, pushing it into a third car waiting at the intersection.

The woman in the passenger seat of the sedan died at the hospital, Hamilton said. She was identified as 55-year-old Maria C. Alvarez. Her husband, who was driving, suffered critical injuries. He is expected to survive.

There were no injuries from the occupants of the two other cars.
