A bicyclist injured when he struck the side of a passing car had been upgraded from critical to serious condition on Tuesday.

The 51-year-old rider apparently had drifted outside of a bicycle lane and into a motor vehicle lane near 700 West and 800 South in Salt Lake City when the accident occurred 5:13 p.m. Monday.

Salt Lake City police Detective Robert Ungricht said the driver stopped to render aid, and paramedics transported the bicyclist to the hospital, where he initially was reported to be in critical condition.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
