A 33-year-old man died hours after he was shot Friday night at a Salt Lake City car wash.

Christian A. Guiterrez-Marquez was cleaning his newly purchased sedan — a black 2015 Toyota Avalon — at 1075 S. Redwood Road when a man approached him about 10 p.m., said Salt Lake City police Detective Cody Lougy. The two had an altercation and the man shot Guiterrez-Marquez in the torso and drove off in his car.

Guiterrez-Marquez stumbled into the roadway and witnesses called police. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition and died from the injuries about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officers located his car at 1532 W. High Avenue (1500 South) after nearby residents reported a vehicle fully engulfed in flames at 3 a.m. Saturday, Lougy said.

"This is a random deal," Lougy said, calling the events a "sad case."

Police said that Guiterrez-Marquez leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old child.

The suspect, who was captured on surveillance video, is described as a man with an average build wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. Police are unsure what motivated the attack, but are asking for the public's help in identifying the man.

Anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts is asked to call 801-799-3000.
