One man was critical and another in serious condition after being hit by a pickup truck late Wednesday morning in downtown Salt Lake City.

Public safety dispatchers confirmed the incident occurred 9:26 a.m. at 400 South and 500 West, an area known for its homeless street camps.

Salt Lake City Police Detective Robert Ungricht said the truck, belonging to Mountain Crane Service, was eastbound on 400 South as it approached a red light at 500 West. When the light turned green, the truck accelerated and struck the rear of a car before veering to the right.

The truck then hit three power poles and the victims, both men in their 30s who were sitting on a grass parking strip between 400 West and 500 West. The vehicle came to a stop just east of 500 South.

Both men were rushed to local hospitals. Both the male driver of the car and the pickup's driver were evaluated by paramedics on the scene but not hospitalized.

Rocky Mountain Power crews also were on the scene to make repairs to the damaged poles.
