Fatigue is believed a factor in a crash that left a man pinned under a semi-trailer rig and closed down all but one eastbound lane on Interstate 80 in Tooele County late Monday night.

The Utah Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. near mile marker 55, roughly midway between Wendover and Salt Lake City.

Troopers suspect the 58-year-old male driver nodded off as he approached the rear of two lime-laden trailers being hauled by the truck, then jolted awake in time to swerve left. The car careened into the median, where the driver over-corrected to the right and back onto the freeway, where it struck the junction of the two trailers, becoming wedged under one of them.

The car's driver was transported by ground ambulance with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The semi's driver was unhurt.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation.

The crash initially closed down all eastbound lanes at the scene, and travel was restricted to one lane well into Tuesday morning before wreckage was cleared.
