An American Fork man is accused of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl as she waited outside of her friend's home at her apartment building.

In charges filed Monday, police wrote that the man, 31, approached the girl and bit her vagina in June while she was eating macaroni and cheese outside of her American Fork apartment complex. The girl underwent a sexual assault exam that showed male DNA and injuries consistent with the assault she described, police wrote.

When an officer arrived at the scene, police wrote, neighbors saw him running away and jumping over a fence. The neighbors' description and the girl's description of the man were similar, according to the charges. The neighbors also said they had seen the man in a car earlier, circling the apartment complex, investigators wrote.

Officers later found the car at a park and questioned the man. They reviewed investigative records showing a woman or girl had complained in April that the man had tried to take a photograph up her skirt. The man also was suspected of sharing child pornography on the Internet in 2013; a search warrant was obtained but not served "for an undisclosed reason," the charges state. An ex-girlfriend of the man reported in 2012 that he had raped her, but she did not cooperate further with the investigation, police wrote.

The man was charged Monday with sodomy on a child and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies.
